Author Interview with Meradeth Houston

We were lucky enough to interview Meradeth Houston, author of the Young Adult novel Chemistry of Fate. We are excited to learn a little bit more about the story behind the story. So, without further ado... take it away, Meradeth!

What inspired you to write The Chemistry of Fate?

Several things came together to get Chemistry started. After finishing Colors Like Memories, my first novel, I had several Sary ideas kicking around. That, along with the concept of journaling, which is something I’ve always been partial to, came together to start Chemistry!
How long did it take you to write The Chemistry of Fate?

The first draft took a couple of months, but then revisions took quite a bit longer, probably closer to six months.

What are some of your favorite books from childhood? Were there any specific authors who inspired you?

As a child, I was a huge reader! I loved A Wrinkle In Time by Madeline L’Engle—actually most of her books totally captivated me when I was younger (still do, actually!). JK Rowling also was a big influence, basically to be a writer who I would love to emulate!

Where did you come up with the characters Tom and Ari?

Ari came to me as I started writing, as I wanted to know about those Sary who have to question their identity when faced with horrible situations. Tom, on the other hand, has a lot in common with me, I mean, other than being a guy. He was quite a bit of fun to work with I’ll admit.

If you could befriend a character from any of your books, who would you befriend? Why?

From Chemistry, I’d love to have a friend like Ari. From all of the Sary books, there’s a character from book #3 who I’d probably get along best with!

Where do you like to write? Do you listen to music while you are writing?

I love writing in a café with lots of interesting people to watch. Either that, or on my couch, haha! I absolutely have to have music to write—it keeps me in tune with what I’m writing!

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Why?

That’s a really hard question! I spent some time in Barcelona, Spain and I would love to live there full time. Either that, or San Diego California. Definitely close to a beach if at all possible!

The Chemistry of Fate is a book that is a companion to Colors Like Memories, but it takes place before the latter. Was it hard to go back and write in this order?
It was certainly tricky! It took a lot of outlining and going over things to make sure all the details were perfect. It’s certainly not the order I’d recommend writing in.
